If you're looking for a unique Montana adventure that's equal parts scenic and awe-inspiring, Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park should be at the top of your list. Just about 50 miles from Bozeman, this park is home to one of the most impressive limestone cave systems in the Northwest! From jaw-dropping stalactites and stalagmites to beautiful views of the surrounding landscape, there's so much to explore. And hey, there's even a Montana Gift Corral location where you can snag a fun souvenir or a Montana gift to remember your trip!
Here are our top 5 reasons to visit Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park this summer:
1. Enjoy the History of Montana’s First State Park
Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park has a pretty cool backstory. Even though the famous explorers never actually set foot inside the caves, the park was named in their honor since their expedition passed nearby. The caverns were known to local Indigenous people long before being "discovered" by ranchers in the late 1800s, and by the early 1900s, guided tours were already a thing, complete with candles and ropes! In 1937, the land officially became Montana’s very first state park. So when you visit, you’re not just exploring a cave, you’re stepping into a piece of Montana’s history!
2. Take a Guided Tour Through the Caverns
One of the best ways to experience Lewis & Clark Caverns is by taking a guided tour; there are two to choose from, and both are super cool. The Classic Tour is the most popular, leading you through a winding underground trail filled with jaw-dropping formations, narrow passageways, and even a slide or two. If you’re looking for something a little easier but still packed with beautiful sights, the Paradise Tour is a shorter, less strenuous option that still shows off the best of the caverns. Just a heads-up, these tours are super popular and spots fill up fast, so it’s a good idea to book ahead before making the trip up!

3. Hike, Bike, and Soak Up the Scenery
Even outside the caves, Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park is a total gem for anyone who loves fresh air and beautiful scenery. There are miles of trails perfect for hiking and biking, with views that stretch across rolling hills and the Jefferson River. Whether you’re up for a heart-pumping climb, like the Cave Gulch Trail, or just want a peaceful stroll surrounded by nature, there’s something for everyone. Don’t forget to pause and take it all in, this place is seriously beautiful!
4. Delicious Meals & Treats at Limespur Cafe
After a day of exploring, hiking, and adventuring, there’s no better place to refuel than the Limespur Café. This charming little diner has all the good stuff: burgers, sandwiches, cold drinks, and even ice cream to help you cool down on those hot summer days. Fun fact: the café gets its name from the original "Limespur Cave," the name given to the caverns back in 1900 by a local man named Dan A. Morrison, who also led the very first tours. It’s a nod to the park’s early days and the folks who first started exploring it!
