Cozy and Beautiful Montana Modern Homes

Montana is well-known for its wild and scenic rivers, stunning glaciated peaks, and endless grasslands and ranch country. The lesser known features of the Treasure State, though equally beautiful in their own right, are the unique architectural wonders that draws inspiration from the region and its rugged past.

Montana's wild landscape has had a lasting impact on building designs and building methods being practiced in the Big Sky country. There is a stark ruggedness involved with many Montana Modern homes these days, with timber framed and rough stone elements drawing from Montana's rustic homestead roots.

We've put together some of our favorite homes and cabins across Montana and Wyoming to inspire you to cozy up your home with western decor!

Fish Creek | Wilson, Wyoming

 Fish Creek in Wyoming

Images and home by On Site Management.

Nestled on the banks of Fish Creek, a tributary of the mighty Snake River, sits a bucolic home site that is a marriage of old and new. Incorporating the charm of the historic barn’s weathered wood and masonry with contemporary design elements has given a new lease on life. The home and barn are a perfect blend of utility and subtle elegance that perfectly compliment the landscape in which it stands.

Over the Edge | Big Sky, Montana

Perched on the western slope of 8,300-foot Andesite Mountain, East Coast owners aptly named their Big Sky home “Over the Edge.” Custom-designed with horizontal windows spanning 50-feet at times, the home connects those on the inside directly with their mountainside location.

Constructed from refined fir timber and weathered Montana fieldstone, the owners consciously employed sustainable materials, securing a LEED Silver Certification. The home’s fir, pine, and white oak interior are warmly lit by light that streams through the abundant wall-to-ceiling windows. Even the forty-foot tall staircase tower winds upwards against a wall of windows, offering stunning views of Eagle Rock, Pioneer, Cedar and Sphinx Mountains.

The four-story floor plan features special locker rooms for ski and fishing gear and a spa that gives outdoor enthusiasts a place to unwind. The use of locally sourced materials creates a natural mountain refuge where owners can escape from their busy city life with family and friends. While the home celebrates its rustic location, its structure and interior design emphasizes the comforts of modernity.

Rancho Relaxo | Montana

Nestled in the mountains of Southwest Montana, Rancho Relaxo has the rustic exterior furnishing reminiscent of the homesteaders' cabins that used to populate this landscape. Continuing inside this modern rustic cabin, you'll discover timber elements and rough sawn facades guiding you to a fully functioning river stone hearth, the centerpiece of the home.
