In the 1860s, Montana was a big player in the gold rush with its southern Montanan gold minds and the connection trail known as the Bozeman Trail. The Bloody Bozeman by Dorothy Johnson recounts stories told by those who migrated west in search of Montana's gold. The book holds historically researched descriptions of the trail, tribulations along the way and journal entries and letters written by those living through it. It also accounts of the interactions between the migrant pilgrims and the local Native Americans and, famously, the leader Red Cloud.

Dorothy Johnson was born in Iowa and moved to Montana when she was young. While in high school, she began working for the local paper and then went on to study English. She continued writing and eventually taught creative writing at The University of Montana. She gained a lot of her knowledge through working with the Montana Historical Society and the Montana Press Association. Johnson eventually was inducted into the Montana Cowboy Hall Of Fame and Western Heritage Center for the "Legacy Award" for her "notable contributions to the history and culture of Montana".
